Structural Engineering

Our expertise combines visionary design with practical execution, ensuring functional, beautiful spaces that meet the demands of modern life and exceed expectations.

Structural Engineering

Site Supervision
During the construction period, we will supervise the construction to ensure that the works are undertaken according to design and the required standard of the Council. This certifies that the work completed is carried out to the highest standard. Our supervisors will actively ensure that the agreed plans match the work being carried out on site.

Structural Assessment & Forensic Report

1. A structural integrity report where the integrity of structural elements and the overall structure has been assessed

2. Structural damage assessment when the structure has been affected by any natural disaster, such as an earthquake or extreme weather event, such as floods, etc.

3. Seismic assessment where the current condition of the structure has been rated in terms of so called NBS value. This exercise is provided in two levels:

  • The first procedure is called the initial assessment (ISA), which indicates the NBS rating based on the MBIE/SESOC guideline. Where the NBS value appears to be greater than 67%, no additional action is required. If the NBS value appears to be less than 67% second stage of assessment is required
  • Detailed seismic assessment (DSA) is the procedure where engineers back analysis of the structure to identify the actual performance of the structure during a target seismic event based on the MBIE/SESOC requirement. This procedure can be so called displacement base or force based and would include structural FEM (finite element modelling). If the NBS value remains less than 67%, seismic strengthening is required. Tera’s Engineers will also indicate potential collapse hierarchy, which will play an imminent role in indicating through potential of the structure during and targeted seismic event.

Structural Analysis & Design

Our Engineers analyse the structure using both traditional and performance-based design approaches, which one more practical. This applies to:

  • New build
  • Structural remodelling included alteration and addition,
  • Repair and strengthening.

Our Engineers are using the most up-to-date techniques and tools in order to provide the most practical and economic design which fits to purpose based on the client’s needs for each project. Based on structural analysis outcome, our engineers will provide appropriate design procedure performs based on requirement of NZ standard and most recent industrial practice using various structural materials based on construction type included but not limited to timber structure (included CLT), Steel structure, Reinforced concrete structure (included precast and cast insitu) and composite structure. Out come of this service would be detailed structural drawings using Revit software, which provides a correct level of structural detailing which clear enough for any experienced contractor to execute as simply/practically to avoid any confusion and minimise possible mistakes during the construction by the contractor. Structural design provided by our engineers is included, but not limited to:

  • Multistorey Structures
  • In-Ground Structures includes piles, retaining walls, palisade walls, etc. Terra Engineers will perform most practical design which fit to purpose and based on the Geotechnical information of the type of ground, the ground condition, the slope, stability and soil parameters.
  • Infrastructure included but not limited to Pipe Bridging & culverts

Our Engineers will lease with geotechnical engineer to discuss and obtain required Geotechnical information and soil parameters in most practical way.

Frequently asked questions

Construction is the process of building structures, infrastructure, and facilities, ranging from homes and offices to roads and bridges. It involves planning, designing, and executing projects using materials like concrete, steel, and wood.

What types of construction projects do you handle?
We specialise in residential, commercial, and industrial construction, including renovations, remodelling, and infrastructure development.
How do you estimate the cost of a project?
We estimate the cost of a construction project, which will consider direct costs (materials, labor, equipment), indirect costs (permits, insurance, overhead), and potential contingencies. A detailed breakdown of these costs is crucial, often involving quantity takeoffs, material and labor cost analysis, and subcontractor quotes.
How do you ensure the quality of construction?
To ensure construction quality, it's essential to implement robust quality control measures, including defining clear standards, conducting regular inspections, and utilising technology for efficient management. This involves careful planning, proactive problem-solving, and a commitment to continuous improvement throughout the project lifecycle.
Do you handle building permits and approvals?
Auckland Council handles building permits and approvals. You'll need to apply for a building consent before starting most building work. Auckland Council assesses your application to ensure it meets building code requirements. If approved, they will issue a building consent, and you can then begin construction.
How do you handle unexpected issues or delays?
To effectively handle unexpected issues or delays, it's crucial to assess the situation, communicate promptly and transparently, adjust plans, and seek solutions. Prioritising tasks, understanding the root cause of the delay, and developing contingency plans are also essential steps.
